Local Planning Policies

Because we are on the boundary of two districts, we are affected by plans from both the Vale of White Horse and South Oxford District Councils, as well as plans from Oxford County Council. On this page we try to keep track of those plans and the responses from the Parish Council.

In 2009, our District Council, the Vale of White Horse, published plans for 2300 new houses in Harwell, in addition to the 600 already approved for Great Western Park; a total of 2900 new houses in the next 20 years.

Even though these houses will be built on the other side of the A34, they are still in the Parish and will have an impact on every person and organisation in the village.

In December 2009 the Vale started consultation on amendment to these plans, which include proposals for another 400 houses in Harwell Parish.

South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) have also published their plans for developments up until 2026.

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC), who are responsible for traffic, have published a Transport Strategy.

The South East Plan was revoked by the Government on 6 July 2010. However that revocation was subject to legal challenge in November 2010, and the outcome was to quash the revocation. The Secretary of State decided not to appeal that decision.

Hence the Plan  has been temporarily reinstated. Although the intention to abolish the South East Plan, remains a material consideration.

The Government is pursuing the full abolition of the South East Plan through the Decentralisation and Localism Bill.
