In the Civil War (1642 - 48)
In the Civil War numerous skirmishes and battles were fought in the surrounding districts and following the second battle of Newbury (1644) Manchester and his soldiers remained in the village for three days; Cromwellian armour has been found in Middle Farm.
In 1688, William of Orange when on his way from Hungerford to Oxford, before the journey on to London to accept the crown, passed along the ancient road, then known as the Golden Mile, which skirts the west side of the parish.
