Message from Harwell RBL
Following the cancellation of the D-Day service at the Harwell stone earlier this month, Harwell RBL has advised that thanks to the vision of the Harwell Campus Management Team, a virtual service has been put together.
This follows a similar format to the D-Day Service, offering a welcome address and reading from Rev Mobey, reflection on why this commemoration remains important and a brief history of the events that took place at RAF Harwell on 5th June 1944 and on the 6th as troops landed in Normandy. The Last Post is played, and a 2 minutes silence observed.
As you might expect this was put together ahead of time, to allow this to be made available on the day that, in different circumstances we’d all meet for the annual Parade and Service.
Marking the occasion on the day we would have gathered, Mr Bob Girling, a former RAF Wing Commander, now Chilton resident and Parish Councillor laid single wreath, with the message “We Will Remember Them, from all in the local Chilton and Harwell communities” in a single solitary act of Remembrance on behalf of us all who would have attended.
We are looking forward to meeting you all again at the 2021 D-Day Commemoration, on 5th June.
