Making a post for the new edition
Now to make a WordPress Post to contain the 3D FlipBook
- Add New Post
- Add a title e.g. Harwell News 223
- In content, add date (e.g. August 2020) followed by —more—
- Add Help Text after the —more— and before the FlipBook (see below)
- Click on the pale yellow button on the RHS of the editing tool bar – 3D FlipBook
- Select the book created above.
- For now, no need to change anything else, so hit OK.
- Make sure the code for the book appears after the —more—
- Set Category to Harwellnews (because it is) and news (so it appears on the front page)
- Check to enable the Post Expirator. Extend the default of 3 weeks if needed.
- Set the expiring categories to be oldnews (so it appears in the news archives) and harwellnews
- Set a featured image by choosing the thumb uploaded earlier.
- Publish. Check the front page of the website to make sure it appears.
Editing the index page
Now find and open to edit https://www.harwellparish.co.uk/harwell-news/.
The Table has 6 columns. One row will be for the year, with two rows below, one for thumbs linking to the News Post, and one for the caption.
When one year is complete, add three new rows above to start off the next year.
- Select the appropriate cell, and Add Media.
- Find the appropriate thumb and insert.
- In a separate window, open the post for this edition and copy the URL, e.g. https://www.harwellparish.co.uk/harwell-news-223/
- Back in the row of thumbs, edit the current thumb
- Set Alt Text to e.g. Harwell News 223 August 2020
- Leave Caption blank
- Set Link to to Custom URL
- For URL, paste the link for this edition.
- Update
- In the cell below the thumb, type in the caption <issue no, date> e.g. 223 Aug 2020 (use 3 letter abbreviation for months)
Now a difficult bit – need to remove the fixed sizing for the image, so that it will shrink appropriately when viewed on a phone.
- Click on the current thumb so that it is highlighted and the edit toolbar appears
- Toggle to Text view (top right of edit window). The HTML code for the thumb should be highlighted, so you know you are in the right place.
- Delete the sequence width=”181″ height=”256″ (width may vary, height should be 256)
- Toggle back to Visual view
- and now Publish the page
Help Text for the edition and the index page
Use these words (or similar, if changes have been suggested, e.g. to include a link to subscribe to receive an email with the PDF copy)
Help? There are controls at the bottom of each edition, with an options to display in full screen (recommended, especially on a phone), Downloading as a PDF and printing are also options. Use the magnify buttons, a mouse wheel or, on a phone, a two finger gesture to zoom in and out, and use the mouse, or fingers, to drag the page to show what you need to see.
Final Check
Check https://www.harwellparish.co.uk/harwell-news/ and click on the link to make sure it’s working.
